Default XML-driven javascript menus?

So I typically use the pop-up behavior in fireworks to generate pull-down web menus, and it seems like the kind of thing that could be adapted to use xml-supplied values rather than user-supplied values. I'm looking for a simple as possible tutorial on how to use (preferably) inline javascript to parse links from an xml sheet.

Also, if anyone has a way to do something similar in flash AS3, that would be helpful.

Thanks so much for your help,

--C.
