A good freeware or shareware to edit XML pages ?

I'm using a software named Epic (Arbortext). Expensive, old and unfriendly... Is it possible to have the same possibilities for cheaper ? And to have back my old models or create new ones ?

Another question : after XML, what is the next stage ?
