what is a RSS feed?

i have this site that has a rss feed button and i read what it is i guess but i dont understand... it has something to do with updated content, or podcasing or something, but can someone help me really understand? im hoping it can be useful...

RSS is program that notice you via email if any update of that site is created, like updated content.
